Che,

Java has been open source for the 7 years that I have been using it.  The founder of Java--James Goslinger, spoke in BKK in the Spring.  Most of the attendees were from Singapore.  Get your free copy of Sun Java at www.java.com
If you get the SDM (Sun Download Manager) you can do it in pieces with dial-up.
Sunmicrosystems gets its name from the place, where it started--SUN=Stanford University Network.

Check out this News article:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061113/tc_nm/sun_java_dc

They are now releasing it under the GNU General Public License, previously, it was a proprietary license, free but still proprietary, now it is under the same license as Linux.

Che,

I stand corrected.  I owe you a new pocket protector.  Java is a great thing.  No more need for the Mac v. Windows debate.  All you need is a browser to run these programs. :usa:  May I recommend the SDN (Sun Developer Network) to anyone interested.

Technically JAVA has always been open source :shoothead: (see below), or at least it's core. Originally the language was produced to control basic and simple machines such as toasters and kettles :readit:

Sun Microsystems provides a GNU General Public License implementation of a Java compiler and Java virtual machine, in compliance with the specifications of the Java Community Process, although the class library that is required to run Java programs is not free software.

In 2004, IBM and BEA publicly supported the notion of creating an official open source implementation of Java. On November 13, 2006, Sun announced that all of the Java source code will be released entirely under a free software license, the GNU General Public License, by March 2007.[13] The javac compiler and the hotspot java VM (but not the class library) were released under the GPL on November 11, 2006. The release of the complete source code under GPL is expected in the first half of 2007.[14]
