Teaching Books
« on: November 10, 2006, 03:29:03 PM »
There is a dirth of teaching books out here in Thailand, especially if a school is stingy with its money. In the computer room, Diaw was talking about emule. I am using www.chmpdf.com and while it is mostly for technical books, they have put up some good educational books lately and is probably worth a look.

FYI, you have to register before you get the good links.

"The Progressive Classroom" by John Dewey (or anything by him)
"Positive Classroom Discipline" by Fredric Jones
"Discipline through Democratic Teaching" by Rudolf Dreikur
"Instructional Management and Democratic Teaching" by Jacob Kounin
"Discipline as Self Control" by Thomas Gordon
"Noncoersive Discipline" by William Glasser
"Discipline with Dignity" by Richard Curwin and Allen Mendler
** The above books are an excellent introduction to teaching philosophy and methodology**

"Discipline and Punish" by Foucault
"Assertive Discipline" by Leo and Marlene Canter
"Transactional Analysis" by Eric Berne and Thomas Harris
**The above books are for those who like a more Draconian approach to teaching**

For those who work with business or the corporate world, these four books provide good information on both the development of ESP and teaching methodology, particularly title 4.

All can bought new or second hand on various book providing websites, whereas Asia books informs me that it might well take up to two months, all of them are around twenty USD a piece.

Wangsuda I had to laugh at Discipline and Punish by Foucault being included on your list and imagined newly moulded Marque De Sade's slavering at the bit, in juxture pose to Foucault I would recommend Habermas' Collection of essay's on Modernity', particularly his theory of 'communicative action', which is very much a rebuttal of Foucault discourse analyisis; but be warned folks both writers are a bit deep.

1. Title: Funky Business.
Author: Nordstrom, K & Ridderstrale, J.
Publisher: Pearson 2000

2. Title: Appropriate Methodology and Social Context.
Author: Holliday, A.
Publisher: Cambridge University Press, 1994

3. Title: Culture and Organisations.
Author: Hofstede, G
Publisher: London: Harper Collins 1991

4. Title: Developments in English for Specific Purposes.
Author: Dudley Evans, T and St John, M
Publisher: Cambridge University Press 1998.

Thank you for being the first person ever to get that "joke." Seriously, many modern schools seem to copy Foucault's Theory on Carcerial Continuum to the "T."
