eMule & torrents
« on: October 26, 2006, 01:59:38 pm »
I have found eMule to be a very useful resource in terms of finding technical books over the internet.

I must have downloaded in excess of 150Gb of assorted technical & academic books over the past 2 months - many of which are either out of print, or just plain unobtainable in Thailand.

The common formats used are 'djvu' (very common for academic scanned books), or the older 'pdf' formats.

What is the djvu format?

djvu format seems to allow a lot more compression than the older pdf format. In many cases, the files are 25% the size of an equivalent pdf.

It is also an OpenSource initiative as I understand things. Most of the academic scans seem to use this format.

There is a win$ plug-in for most browsers, as well as a standalone reader available for download. Linux seems to also support the format pretty well.

Sam, give me a list of what you're looking for & I'll do a few searches. The trick to finding what you're looking for is how you search, but once you get the knack, you can find the most amazing stuff.

Author name/s, initials
Year
Publisher
Title

I can then point you in the right direction.

I'm currently doing a search for a mutual friend & I'm finding everything else but the books needed.

I'll document my search procedure via eMule so that other folks can get the knack of ways of scanning the many millions of books out there. I'll then move into a search via a bit-torrent & see if we can unearth the beasts that way. In any event, I'll list the logic & results. It'll help other folks in future. I won't admit defeat until I've tried every route I know.

The biggest constraint is how much search time the servers allow you - you have to strike correctly to prevent wasting the valuable 20sec per server.

What are the best tips for finding stuff? I am kind of bewildered by the choices on emule. Lots of servers to choose from? What does 20sec per server mean? Can you help us out a bit more, diaw?

I've got eMule re-loading after an ISP line-drop.

Give me a few minutes & I'll take a few screen-shots of the main search screen.

Click on the above image.

Select the type of item you want to download... I usually leave it as any, if I'm scouting for books.

-------------

Next, select method... The global (servers) grabs a bunch of servers, each allocating 20s of search time. An alternative is to use the Kad network, which is also pretty good.

-----------

Name :  some information on the book you are searching for eg. Dover - publisher
Extension: pdf, djvu, zip

If you leave the extension blank, then you end up being swamped with mp3's & smut...

Hope that gives you some insights into eMule... it is an amazing resource... Once you've got that part smooth, we'll look at optimising down/upload speeds.

Good luck, Rob.

There are a few tricks for getting the download speed up to a reasonable level - but mostly this depends on your connection.
