I worked in Chumpae for a salary over 40k on the better months. You'll likely be bored out of your britches, but the pay is good. The difference would be the living conditions, things to do in town and general air of anxiety, anger and fear of the foreign person. There were rumors in the NW of foreigners actually eating Thai babies a few years back and people really believed it too.
I found the school politics to be assinine, and the students were typical Esan girls just trying to find a pee pee to hop on and ride out of town...though it's decidedly all a fantasy to them anymore to me...very odd custom it is day dreaming about things that you know will probably never come true and do nothing to help come true, yet regard as of greater importance and reality than actual real things and people. The Buddhist would call it "samsara," and it's what "The Matrix" movie was based on: a living illusion meant to take the place of real life.
Even if you're not into the philosophy behind that junk, the idea's basically the same...they're all off in bloody space and doing anything but trying to learn English. If you had a live in girlfriend or wife, it wouldn't be bad, but she'd probably have to take most of her time to fend off evil spirits of the towny voodoo curse brigade, thus making your life just that much less meaningful and that much more awkward.
After I left the school I missed it, but I think that's the thing with a lot of these folks, they're only good when they're gone. Sounds cynical, but it's a real point too. Strange and sad sometimes, but true.
