Chiang Mai University TEFL Course
« on: November 25, 2007, 05:39:56 AM »
A couple of months back, there was a thread about CMU TEFL.  There had been rumors going around, including a berating post about one of its directors; "Dr. Jay."  Dr. Jay was accused of misrepresenting himself and of having a bogus Ph.D..  Dr. Jay quickly came to his own defense and tackled these rumors head on.  The course has been known to be thorough and effective; CMU is one of the top Universities in Thailand.   The Language Institute has a shiny new 80 million Thb facility--partly paid for by eager newbie TEFLers shelling out 46,000 Thb to attend the 120 hour class.

Many of you are reading this saying "...this is old news, WTF..."  The new news is that I visited the CMU website recently and there is now no mention whatsoever of the estranged Dr. Jay.  Would someone out there please inform the forum of what happened.  I think many past, present, and future students have a right to know, as well as others, who may be interested in a Thailand based TEFL course. :theband:

I noticed the change as well and am curious what has transpired since I got the impression that this trainer did a lot to build the program.

I belled me friend what actually worked with the bloke.  She said she saw him two days ago in town, showing somebody the sights.  And, she almost ran him over a month previous, just outside CMU.  Surely enough, he is not prominently shown on the current CMU Language Institute website.  That proves nothing.  He may have moved on and out.  In fact, another friend says that an unmentionable TEFL course provider claimed to have talked with this same Aussie bloke in October, in conjunction with CMU's TEFL program.  So there you has it once again, rumours about tumours in his bloomers.

It's actually Dr Matt not Dr Jay. He's been removed from the website but is still very much the guy in charge and yes they are in partnership with TEFL Int.

Check out this page from TEFL Course China (aka TEFL Abroad China) which claims "to operate under the auspice of Chiang Mai University" and:

"The TEFL Course China Program is administered by the Language Institute, Chiang Mai University. It is approved and accredited by the Language Institute’s Board of Directors and by Chiang Mai University’s president as an academic course offered by Chiang Mai University and incorporated within the overall curriculum.

A TEFL Certificate delivered by TEFL Abroad and issued by Chiang Mai University will receive the same high level of respect and recognition that any graduate of CMU can expect from academic institutions and employers worldwide.

All graduates of the TEFL Certificate Program, receive a Chiang Mai University certificate signed by the director of the Language Institute and by the president of Chiang Mai University."

I have sent an email to CMU enquiring as to the bona fides of the claims, but haven't had a response yet.

Hi -

Sorry! There is no 'story' about why I am not on the website - just changed jobs - I am now director of international programs at CMU - the CMU TEFL is only one of the programs for which I am responsible - we have a programs manager for each of our programs, who handles all enquires and requests - I couldn't do this for ALL the international programs and, if I am on the websites, people tend to contact me directly.

Cheers,

Matt

Just looked at their website. On the Schedule page, apart from a price rise to 52K THB (around US$1713), it only mentions TEFL International!

So in other words, they are just a franchisee for TEFL International?

A rumour in Chiang Mai is that Bruce V. of TEFLInternational met with Dr. Matt of CMU recently.

Sounds kind of like they are wearing a dirty jockstrap under a tuxedo on this one.

it has to be said that the majority of graduates from the agency in question rarely have gripes about the quality of the product

A point often overlooked by most :)
