I've found a great way to get mid to upper level M3 students to get talking....explaining Thai sayings and superstitions.

What I've done is:
Explained what a "saying" is. "The early bird gets the worm." and "A rolling stone gathers no moss" are two that are easy to explain.

Elicit example of Thai sayings. Needless to say, they will find it hard to explain in English. Let them know its ok. But........

Tell them you are really interested in Thai saying and ask them to do this:

Divide them into groups of 4-5 students. Write on the board the following:

Project - Thai Sayings
Make this for 10 Thai sayings.

The saying in Thai
The phonetic pronounciation of the saying in Thai so the teacher can understand.
The direct translation of the saying in English.
What the real meaning of the saying in English.
Draw a picture of the saying.

When the project is presented, have each student in the group explain a saying or two.

For the EP students I had them do the same thing on PowerPoint. Check out the attachment for a sample.

In addition to English, I also dabble a bit in science. Here's a fun science lab for p6 or m1 students. Contrary to what the directions say, you can see results in 45 minutes! It entails measuring objects, volumes, and weights, and forming and proving (or disproving) a hypothesis. Hope you like it!
