Daung border, Cambodia... Beware visa extension holders
« on: November 05, 2007, 05:31:11 pm »
I just resigned from my last job and my visa extension expires this week.  I turned in my WP at the board of labor, kept the receipt and went to get a visa run van from On Nut.  Before getting onto the van, I was told that the Thai authorities would not let me leave Thailand without a stamp in my passport from immigration that said that my WP was canceled and what day my visa extension expires (7 days from resignation date, which happens to be the day before my visa expires.)

I went to immigration that morning and they looked at me as if I had grown a second head asking for the stamp.  "Your visa expires almost that day anyway, why do you need another stamp?"  As much as I tried to explain, they would not give me a letter or a stamp.  I was told to try another border or just to fly out as they were sure that I would not have a problem at the airport.  I decided just to fly, but I'm hoping that I won't have a problem... especially now that I am over the seven days that I had after resigning.

Since Thursday is a holiday in Malaysia and Singapore, I have to spend the weekend at a hotel and get a tourist visa... which is costing me much more than the original border-hop.  Ah, amazing Thailand.

when i left Thailand last July, I never got a stamp for cancelling my work permit at the immigration office, neither did my wife. Another teacher who left with us in solidarity(doing a midnight run) didn't have any cancellation of work permit in his passport. We all got stamped out with no problems at all at the airport.

Sabai,

So you had your reciept from returning your WP in with your passport?  My experience is not to provide documentation that might lead to a confusing situation to overworked, underpaid government officials.  Generally speaking, keeping it simple for them makes it simple for you.  The more paperwork you give them, the more they can find wrong with it.

But thats just my experience...I'm sure others like yourself in your same position can share others.
