Contact INFO, M.o.Ed. Bangkok, Corporal Punishment
« on: October 27, 2007, 08:35:11 am »
Anyone have a name or specific address/phone in Bangkok of the office which handles corporal punishment enforcement. By enforcement, I mean someone who cares when the law is violated. Thanks. Susan

I believe corporal punishment in schools was made illegal a few years back. Maybe, if you have a complaint, you should go to the police.

The police indicate the complaint has to come from the parent to be prosecuted. Susan

How long have you been teaching in Thailand, Susan? Get real. Thai students learn best in classes where the teacher carries a stick.

I should think a call to the MoE should elicit some sort of positive response to any teacher, farang or Thai, who objects to the whacking of students and who wants to find out if there's any consequence the MoE itself can bring down on the school.

Susan, would you care to tell us something about why you want to call the MoE about corporal punishment?

Ha ha ha

What admirable naivety of Thai bureaucracy from one so long in the tooth - quite touching actually ;D

Thank you for your kindness, Saint Hero. I do think and believe that, faced with a demanding parent, the MoE might have to get off its duff for a change to enforce the law.

RST,

What law enforcement powers does the MOE have?  I'd be willing to bet their first response would be something like.....

"Have the parents call the police and have the police investigate the incident."

I'm amazed with all your "experiences" you are not aware of that.....but I guess thats why its called amazing Thailand....or is that India....oh well, you know what I mean.

Er .... you missed the point of the thread .... if there was a demanding parent then the police would be the agency to turn to.

As it is we have a 'meddlesome foreign teacher' (not casting aspersions personally - just seeing it through a Thai bureaucrat's eyes) with a 'tale' in which the parents clearly aren't interested.  The MoE would be about as interested in that as I am in NBA basketball!

Although you are welcome to spend a day on the phone finding that out ..... just don't say I didn't warn you.  In fact it's a dare, you find me a bureaucrat at the MoE who gives a shit about a complaint regarding corporal punishment from a farang teacher and I promise to give you positive karma every day for a fortnight - thus raising you to a status higher than tiresome drivel-peddlar at this site  :didisay:

Well Susan, if YOU care when the law is violated, why don't you speak to the teacher or administrator who is doing the beating and tell them to cut it out?

If the violator is a co-teacher and you don't have the stomach for confrontation, then tell your assistant director or school director, and you will be viewed as a meddlesome and naive foreign teacher.  If you go over everyone's head and file a police complaint, you will be fired from your job faster than shit through a goose.

I'm not sure what your home country is, but if it's the UK or USA, you would always begin with the co-teacher and proceed to the next level of school admin.   :usa:

The teacher is Thai, well find a thai person to write a letter in Thai saying that 'someone' doesn't like what they are doing with the kids. Leave this someplace where the teacher will find it and they'll just think it's a Thai person and they'll be scared and try to see which Thai teachers is complaining about them.

If the teacher is a foreigner, just write a note in very badly written English telling them if you not stop hit students and you not stop being serious with students. I go to police station. They tell you leave Thailand. You very bad.

^  Very good, practical advice!  A complaint to the MOE would, at best, be met with mock concern.  If they didn't just tell you that it's up to the parents to complain and f-off, then they would pretend to listen sympathetically and then do nothing.

If the parents complained (and they had any status), something would be done.  As a foreigner, you won't get anywhere with this.
