Has anyone heard of a teacher actually being denied an extention of her VISA because of a lack of a police clearance?

I was also informed that the new guidelines required a TEFL "Certificate" with some number of hours, a real college degree from an English speaking country, a culture awareness class certificate(about Thai culture),  and, lastly to my shock, that the teacher be a Native English Speaker. When all these are met, you will be paid the same wage as previously when none of these may have been met.

Please confirm or refute these aspects. Thanks. Susan, a woman in distress.

who informed you and when?

Teachers' Council of Thailand has not finalised their requirements yet as far as I know, so until they do business as normal. Of course being Thailand the right hand tells the left hand what the right foot should be doing and the right foot doesn't listen to anyone anyway.

Susan,

From what I understand ......here's is the current situation.  This situation may vary depending on the school, the official at the MOE granting teachers licenses, the phase of the moon and the location of the school.  This only my personal gleemings from this board and others.

1.  Police clearances.  My understanding is that they are a school requirement, not a MOE one.
2.  Gaining a teachers license requires a real degree.  Once again, its up to the school to verify the accuracy of the teachers documentation and I've know occasions when teachers were required to provide verification of their documentation to the MOE.

Teaching in government schools, it depends on the school.  You are NOT required to have a degree to teach in a government school, a police report or really anything.  HOWEVER most government schools do required degrees.  Its up to the school.

3.  The teachers council of Thailand thing...my humble opinion...its a scam.  If the school wants you to take the course, then let the school pay for it.

Remember the requirements for private schools (where you need a teachers license) and a government school is quite different.

Hope this helps...and I'm sure more posters will chip in as well.

Teaching in a government school. The Thai co-ordinator(a teacher) who goes along with the farang teachers for the VISA extentions was advised by immergration(sp,brain cramp) that from now on a police check was required. The other items were from a M.o.E. list of some sort with the statement "all schools the same".Susan

Any truth to the rumor? that a degree is required for a work permit?

I find it very odd and complex logically how and why they(the powers, M.o.E. and Imergration) would encourage existing teachers to leave and hope to replace them from a pool of people even less qualified. This seems to be the current practice. The schools don't seem to share this belief but just accept it as dictated to them. At the end of course, you will end up hurting the students. Susan

I just went thru this for the 11th time in Sept.

MoE requires copies of degrees/dimplmates for a teacher cert.

Bureau of Immigration requires a sponsor of your visa application.

Ministry of Labor requires a Teacher License for a Work Permit.

Not all categories of schools require a WP. Not all categories of schools require a TL. Not all categories of schools require a university credential.

The Teachers Council of Thailand and its nonsense is someone's wet dream.

Police Clearances are up to the school, to include government schools.

The fact is, all Thai schools should be required to have a clearance from Teflwatch.   ;D

Susan, it appears to be a fact that some teachers in some provinces of Thailand have always managed to get work permits, etc., without degrees, in some government schools.  It appears to still be true, not just rumour.

It depends if your program is private or public, EP or bilingual or neither, where it is, who the director is, etc.  There are still locations where nobody cares if you're not legal.
