Best Supermarket in BKK
« on: March 16, 2007, 11:30:14 PM »
Just polling for opinions and new spots to shop at.  Where is the best place to buy farang food in the LoS.   The teachers where I work all recommend Villa Market at Ploenchit, Emporium and the supermarket at Siam Paragorn....been to all of these and they have their good points and bad points but I'm wondering if there is someplace out there I've missed and your opinion of them.

Tops is decent for many western things - especially the ones at Central Chid Lom and Sala Daeng.

Foodland Nana is okay too.

The supermarkets at Emporium and Siam Paragon are nice too...if you don't mind paying through the nose.

My 2 cents worth...

Carrefour at On Nut and most Foodlands are good for me and the odd bottle of HP fruity sauce has meandered into my shopping trolley on occasion, however not any one of them has everything and on the whole they are all quite expensive but I think this stems from government importation duty on food stuffs and of course overpricing by the markets themselves, and being poorly paid teachers.

Carrefour - good for cheeses and deli, but otherwise similar to Tesco's
Foodland - good for surprises, usually the stores are to small IMO and often high priced
Tescos - cheap and cheerful, started well in terms of farang food offered and then backslided
Villa - Has a good selection but once again you pay for it.

All this has made me hungry I'm off for sandwich!

There is a very good Villa Market in the Sports City complex not too far from Dhurakijpundit University on Prachachuen Road.  It is stocked to the limit with everything, Thai or Western, and I've been able to find items there that I could not find any place else.  It appears to be relatively unknown outside of the area and I've found it a very leisurely place to shop and never a hassle of any kind.

I'm out of Bangkok, the best supermarket we've got is Tops and even for a Tops, it sucks.

I found the Villa Supermarket on Suk soi 33 to be extremely well stocked with foreign foods. Any place that has Oscar Meyer hot dogs and canned Hormel tamales can't be all bad.

Back in the States, the only time you touched Hormel tamales was when you just a wee bit drunk....now I miss the damn things...will have to try there just for them...Its it on Sukumvit or down a soi?  Been down there a few times, but don't remember a Villa.

pickled jalapenos - Villa Ploenchit

mac and cheese - about all "western" grocery stores about 65B a box

Haven't seen crawfish, or good crab boil, just old bay.  I get friends in the states to send me Zaterians in the bag.

Haven't seen black eyed peas.

white cornmeal is everywhere.  I mix cornmeal and flour 50/50 to fry chicken and okra.

Haven't seen black eyed peas.

I was able to find them at a Foodland not far from the intersection of Ramkamhaeng and Rama 9 roads. Canned of course. In addition, said Foodland has great hamburger patties and a great diner type restaurant.

Update on Villa Supermarket on Sukhumvit: They stopped stocking Hormel beef tamales AND chili with beans. That's a downcheck from me. However, I did order a holiday turkey from them, complete with stuffing and gravy. The turkey was delivered ON TIME and HOT! It was perfect. That almost makes up for the lack of tamales and chili. Now, who sells canned or prepared Tex-Mex food? I know Tops doesn't.

I haven't seen any canned tex-mex....but I make a mean pot of chilli!  The wife even goes for it...serve with rice and she's a happy camper!  About the only canned hormel food product around is Spam.

Nemesis....I'll PM you my address....and some of that Velvetta kind of cheese they have where you live.....take about 1/3 of a stick of that with some chilli, jalapenos and microwave it till the cheese melts....a perfect dip for doritos.

STOP IT! You're making my mouth water! I would KILL for a can of no-bean chili! I don't know why Thai stores have such an aversion to importing good Tex-Mex. Heaven forbid Thais should broaden their food horizon.
