Prince of Songkhla Uni-Phuket Campus/Hat Yai Medical School
« on: February 16, 2006, 06:13:37 pm »
Anybody any experience of these 2 (different) campuses of POS Uni?

Any comments about POS in general? They sometimes advertise for scores of teachers in one hit. Is there somethg we should be told?

Also: I know Phuket, but not Hat Yai. Does anyone have any gen on the place? Distance to beaches? Attitude to Falangs? Social scene? Number of westerners around? Dirty city? Shopping? Anythg?

Not much info for you mate, but I did once know a girl working at POS uni in Phuket Town.  She loved it, although she had just graduated in education from the US and was doing as a couple of years away from home before starting life as a career teacher.  I knew her a couple of years ago when I lived down there on a long holiday before I started teaching.  Looking back it seemed like she was putting in a lot of her own time into the place (although in her circumstances not begrudgingly) and for what I now know to be a paltry wage (less than 30k anyway).

Not sure what salary you get there now, but it seemed to me like they were paying on a par with upcountry (Isaan, Northern) universities when everyone knows Phuket is more expensive than Bangers to live!

I like Hat Yai a lot, it is a great city, but others have different opinions. It has a great downtown shopping area where you can get just about anything. As well as having all a McD, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen, KFC, etc, they have a Sizzler. Loads of Malaysian tourists go to hat Yai for the weekend so it has a decent nightlife.  Hat Yai is a little on the dirty side, but no worse than many Thai cities. A good number of westerners around Hat Yai and you are less than an hour by bus away from the beach, it is only 25 km, but you know buses in Thailand. I never had a problem with any bad atittudes towards foreigners, in the downtown area there are places that overcharge tourist, but locals can easily avoid them. One thing some have a problem with is a large number of Muslims. I don't have a problem with Hat Yai musims, but some people have an unreasonable fear of them.

I have known a couple of people who worked at the Medical School and they didn't seem to have any complaints at all. The hospital itself sucks, (they have a written policy of charging foreigners double the amount they charge Thais), but the medical school seems alright.

Any more questions, just pop away, I did a 1 year stint in Hat Yai.
